If one is going on a hike on Chol HaMoed Sukkot, does one have to not bring mezonot or HaMotzi on the hike, or can one treat a future event as a situation where one doesn’t have access to a sukkah and bring sandwiches to eat?

Rav Lichtenstein has an article on this from about 30 years ago. His conclusion is that it is mutar me’ikar hadin based on הולכי דרכים. I would totally agree based also on תשבו כעין תדורו, and people go on hikes without eating in a home. Nevertheless, some are machmir either because it’s not appropriate to do a trip that will prevent you from doing the mitzvah or מעיקר הדין if the trip can be done at another time. Rav Asher Weiss is among those who are lenient מעיקר הדין.
