Repeating Shofar Berakhah After Already Being Yotzei
QUESTION
If someone blows shofar for another person before the main communal shofar blowing and is already yotzei the mitzvah, can he recite the berakhah again when blowing for the congregation later?
ANSWER
Yes. See the Rema (SA OH 585:2) and MB there (585:5):
Before one blows one makes the blessing “to hear the sound of the shofar” and makes the blessing “shehecheyanu.” Rema: And there is no distinction between blessing for oneself or if one has already fulfilled [the obligation of blessing] and blesses to fulfill the obligation of others. Either way, the one blowing makes the two aforementioned blessings.
(5) “Or if he has already fulfilled [his obligation], etc.” — The later authorities conclude that in a case where the person blowing the shofar has already fulfilled his own obligation, it is preferable for the listeners themselves to recite the two blessings. However, if they do not know how to recite the blessings themselves, then he should recite them on their behalf in order to fulfill their obligation.
The common practice, however, is to be lenient and allow the shofar blower to recite the blessings on their behalf in all cases. One should not object to this practice, because this is in fact the primary ruling according to the strict law, as the Pri Chadash and the Gra wrote.
