QUESTION

Brooklyn, NY

May one set up a temporary hammock on Shabbat/Yom Tov, assuming it doesn’t require knots, not on a tree. Is it problematic if it’s attached to a pole that is part of the Sukkah structure? What about a pole that is part of a building structure (e.g. a fire escape)?

ANSWER

Assuming it’s temporary, it’s fine. Connected to a tree would be no good – משמש באילן, but this way, the worst it could be is עשיית, and if it’s temporary and made for use
